A group of researchers: Amrit Aryal, Santosh Giri, Sanjeeb Prasad Panday, Suman Sharma, Babu R. Dawadi, & Sushant Chalise from the Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University (TU) has achieved a notable academic milestone with the successful publication of a high-quality research article in IEEE Access, a globally reputed Q1-ranked, peer-reviewed international journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The research paper, titled “Efficient 3D Scene Reconstruction from Multi-View RGB Images Using Optimized Gaussian Splatting,” is authored by a team of faculty members and students from the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, IOE. This achievement reflects the growing strength of collaborative research between faculty and students at IOE and highlights the institution’s rising presence in the global research community.

The published study introduces an efficient and scalable approach to three-dimensional (3D) scene reconstruction, demonstrating significant improvements over existing state-of-the-art techniques such as Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF). The proposed method achieves:

  • Up to 67% reduction in memory usage
  • Nearly threefold reduction in training time
  • Real-time rendering performance exceeding 89 frames per second
    — while maintaining high visual fidelity on consumer-grade graphics hardware.

In addition to its strong theoretical contributions, the research successfully integrates real-time visualization using modern platforms such as Unreal Engine, enabling immersive walkthroughs and interactive 3D environments. The outcomes of this research have practical applications in cultural heritage preservation, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), simulation, visualization, and engineering education.

Publication in IEEE Access, a journal indexed in major international databases and recognized for its rigorous peer-review process, signifies the international standard, originality, and impact of the research conducted at IOE. This accomplishment stands as a proud moment for Tribhuvan University and the Institute of Engineering, reinforcing their commitment to excellence in research, innovation, and higher education.

Publication in IEEE Access (Q1) underscores the quality, originality, and global relevance of the research, and marks a proud achievement for IOE, Tribhuvan University, reinforcing its position as a leading institution for engineering research in Nepal.
