Lalitpur, Nepal — Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shree Raj Shakya, Director of the Center for Energy Studies (CES) and faculty of Pulchowk Campus, Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University (TU), has made a notable scientific contribution through his involvement in a high impact international publication in the prestigious journal Nature Climate Change (SJR 2024: 8.046; Q1; 5-year Journal Impact Factor: 32.9).
The article, titled “Perspectives on Climate Change in South Asia,” has been published as a Viewpoint and brings together leading researchers from across South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Published in a Q1 journal, the paper highlights South Asia as one of the world’s most climate vulnerable regions, facing intensifying challenges such as heatwaves, floods, droughts, glacial melting, air pollution, and ecosystem degradation. The publication emphasizes the urgent need for region-specific, inclusive, and science-informed responses to climate change.
In his contribution as the corresponding author, Dr. Shakya emphasizes equity and resilience in clean energy transitions across South Asia. He highlights the region’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels despite its vast renewable energy potential and underscores the role of decentralized renewable energy systems in improving energy access while reducing emissions. He further stresses the importance of inclusive policies, institutional capacity building, and climate finance to ensure just and sustainable energy transitions.
As Director of CES, IOE, TU, Dr. Shakya’s involvement in this publication reflects the growing role of the Center for Energy Studies in shaping evidence-based energy and climate discourse at regional and global levels. This achievement further strengthens Tribhuvan University’s academic presence in international climate research and reinforces Nepal’s voice in discussions on sustainable development and low-carbon pathways in South Asia.
